APA Referencing Guide

This online guide is an abridged version of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2020a) 7th edition manual.

For the standard layout of a note section please see Figures and Tables Basics.

Below is an example of a table with a note section. This example has all of the information taken from the same source, so it is appropriate to use a single note section beneath. If you have adapted information from multiple sources and require more than one reference below the table, list them in alphabetical order by author (ie. as they appear in the reference list). Separate each reference by using a semi-colon.

Table 1

First Quarter Calorie Intake vs Deficit.

A screencapture of a table with numerical information. It is displayed for formatting and referencing purposes. The table has only horizontal lines on the top and bottom of the table, and a horizontal line under the first row. There are no vertical lines in the table.

Below is an example of a table with in-text citations instead of a note section. This example has all of the information taken from multiple sources, so it was more appropriate to use parenthetical citations. Each citation must have a reference list entry.
